NEWS
The Detroit Lions hope this is the season that wide receiver Calvin Johnson goes completely crazy.
He has all of the talent in the world but has been held back by injuries and being in a terrible offense on an awful team.
That’s not the case this year, with the Lions having improved at many positions on that side of the ball.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and tight end Brandon Pettigrew are both going into their sophomore seasons and showed a lot of promise during their rookie years. (Read More…)

The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Shaun Hill to be a backup to starter Matthew Stafford.
Hill was with the San Francisco 49ers for much of last year before the Lions acquired him via trade.
He had made a solid impression with the 49ers and actually was given the opportunity to start for them. (Read More…)

Cornerback Dre Bly has rejoined the Detroit Lions, signing a two-year contract with his former team.
Bly has been out on the free agent market for several months hoping someone would be interested in signing him.
A two-year deal is probably the best possible outcome he could have expected, as a one-year deal seemed more likely. (Read More…)

The Detroit Lions found another big-time player in defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
There was some talk about Detroit trading down or possibly going in a different direction, but they settled on Suh.
Suh’s stock seemed to take a hit sometime in the weeks leading up to the draft, which is really strange.
He was absolutely dominant in the Big 12, had a phenomenal performance at the scouting combine and is very impressive off the field.
It was almost like he was too good to be true, and that started to scare some teams. He will easily be the best player to come out of this draft.

The Detroit Lions have acquired veteran tight end Tony Scheffler in a trade with the Denver Broncos.
The team also received a seventh-round draft pick from the Broncos as a part of the trade.
As part of a three-team trade, the Lions have sent linebacker Ernie Sims to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sims is a former first-round draft pick who has failed to live up to expecations with the Lions.
The acquisition of Scheffler gives the team some insurance as Brandon Pettigrew fights back from an injury.

From Halloween until two weeks before Christmas, the Detroit Lions will play at home five times out of seven games. Of course, that means there are plenty of road games on the slate early and late.
The National Football League has revealed game dates and times for the 2010 season. Detroit opens with three road games in the first four weeks, and closes with two road games in its final three contests.
The season opens at Chicago on Sept. 12. Philadelphia comes calling for the home opener Sept. 19. The next two weeks are at Minnesota and at Green Bay. A home game with St. Louis and a visit to the New York Giants are on tap before the Lions arrive at their bye week on Oct. 24.
Starting Oct. 31, the Lions enjoy five home games in a seven-game span. It starts with consecutive home games against Washington and the New York Jets. After a pair of road games at Buffalo and at Dallas, the Lions play host to New England for the annual Thanksgiving Day game. Home games with Chicago and Green Bay follow.
Detroit plays two road games in a row late in December, at Tampa Bay and at Miami, before concluding the season Jan. 2 by playing host to Minnesota.

The Detroit Lions have traded lineback Ernie Sims to the Philadelphia Eagles.
As a part of a three team deal, the Lions received tight end Tony Scheffler and a seventh-round pick in exchange for Sims.
Sims was a disappointment in his short time with the Lions and might just need a change of scenery.
Scheffler is injury-prone but gives the Lions some much-needed depth at the tight end position.
Starting tight end Brandon Pettigrew is coming off of a serious injury and could be shaky to start the year.

A judge has ordered former Detroit Lions wideout Charles Rogers to repay the team $6.1 million.
Rogers was suspended for substance abuse back in 2005 and then was released by the team a year later.
They have been trying to recover two-thirds of the $9.1 million signing bonus he received as a rookie.
An agent for Rogers said that that wide receivers want to play football in Canada and share his earnings with the Lions.
The former Michigan State star has been in and out of jail for substance abuse problems ever since coming into the league.

The Detroit Lions have signed free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch to a four-year contract worth $26 million.
It had been speculated for some time that Vanden Bosch would end up with the Lions to reunite with head coach Jim Schwartz.
Schwartz was the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans during Vanden Bosch’s best seasons.
The defensive end struggled in his new role with the Titans last year, but is looking forward to bouncing back in 2010.
The Lions need some serious help on the defensive side of the ball, and he should certainly help.

The Detroit Lions have signed free agent wide receiver Nate Burleson to a five-year deal worth $25 million.
Detroit is working hard to create plenty of weapons around young quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The team already has a No. 1 wideout in Calvin Johnson, and Bryant Johnson has been very good in a complimentary role.
They also drafted tight end Brandon Pettigrew last year and expect him to become a big target next season.
Still, Burleson’s inconsistency and long injury history has to be a major red flag for such a long-term deal.
